Introducing Human Expressions

Re-inventing the Portrait through Color, Form, and Composition

The portrait has long been a powerful medium through which artists explore identity, emotion, and the essence of the human condition. Human Expressions invites artists to reimagine and push the boundaries of this traditional genre, encouraging the exploration of new ways to convey the complexities of human experience. This exhibition seeks works that capture the depth of human expression through innovative approaches to portraiture, focusing on the transformative use of color, form, and composition.

We were looking for artists who are eager to break away from conventional representations of the human figure and create bold, evocative portraits that explore psychological, emotional, and conceptual facets of human identity. Whether through abstracted forms, unconventional color palettes, dynamic compositions, or mixed media, we encourage the use of any technique that can convey the intricacies of human expression in a compelling way. Any original 2D or 3D work that follows our exhibition guidelines was considered. Works selected by the juror will be exhibited in Maryland Federation of Art’s (MFA) second Human Expressions Exhibition through our Virtual Gallery from April 15 – June 14, 2026.

Juror’s Statement

*Juror Talk will be published Monday, May 4 on our YouTube. Thank you for your patience!

It was such a pleasure to jury Human Expressions! The selected works represent a wide range of technical and expressive approaches to the human portrait. With so many strong entries, it was difficult to assign awards to certain works over others – in the end, I chose to spotlight works that were both expressive in content as well as form.

In Clarice Lispector’s book The Besieged City she says, “The dangerous thing is that each person was dealing with centuries”.  A portrait is always a complex undertaking, one that cannot help but contain a wealth of interpersonal dynamics and technical challenges. Some of these works highlight family connection, cultural practices, and environmental relationships. Others focus solely on the portrait, rendering in subtle, quiet gestures or bold, assertive marks.

For the curation of this show I prioritized expressive content, the painterly mark and unconventional materials. Aside from the literal gesture of a portrait; the sitter’s disposition, there is the mark which expresses itself on the page. The visible mark of the painting is the fingerprint of the work, the proof of life. The work in this show reflects a great range of human emotion, while also revealing all the unique ways artists can articulate themselves through their respective mediums.
