About Amanda

Amanda is an award winning, professional oil painter, working out of her home studio located in Severn, Maryland. A true local to the area, Amanda grew up outside of Annapolis and has spent the last decade challenging herself to work ‘en plein air’ to describe scenes of everyday life around the Chesapeake Bay region. She paints in a representational style using modern Impressionist techniques like broken color and loose brushwork.

The artist has been showing her work for over 20 years and is known best for her vibrant color palette. Amanda strives to describe everyday scenes with her own impressions of color and light. She finds the process of oil painting to be expressive in itself, mixing and moving the paint around to get the desired effect. As a representational painter, she is endlessly fascinated by the challenges of piecing together a cohesive image, from one decision to the next. The artist is most inspired by rich color. Amanda enjoys getting lost in comparing each color and value, trying carefully to preserve the moment; to really see the essence of her subject. She keeps her colors as intuitive as possible, sticking with her initial impressions. Amanda explores a variety of subjects in her work including landscape, still life, and figure.

Amanda’s plein air technique involves careful consideration of her subject, composition, and color through the use of small sketches and a limited palette. She paints on location, within a small window of time of only several hours, to create her plein air works. Sometimes she returns to the same location, at the same time of day to complete her larger paintings.

Milliner holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland. She has studied both classical and high renaissance art history on location in Florence, Italy at Studio Art Centers International (SACI). Amanda shows her work at the member-owned gallery, Artists’ Gallery Ellicott City, where she also served on the Board of Directors from 2022-2025. Amanda is currently the Vice President of the Mid-Atlantic Plain Air Painters Association (MAPAPA). In addition to her studio practice, Amanda also teaches adult art classes at the Columbia Art Center in Howard County, Maryland. The artist competes and displays her artwork at national juried exhibitions for the Oil Painters of America (OPA) and the American Impressionist Society (AIS).
