Beacon Celebration of the Arts:

The Beacon Newspapers is pleased to present the “Celebration of the Arts” – a year-long program, in partnership with the Maryland Federation of Art – designed to entice individuals 50 and over throughout the MD/DC/VA region to try a new artistic endeavor, and then to enter their best work in a regional competition in one or more of these four categories:

  1. Painting and drawing: Any one-dimensional work on any flat surface in pen and ink, charcoal, pastel, watercolor, acrylic, oil paint or other paint or dye
  2. 3-D/mixed media artwork: any hand-made, two- or three-dimensional sculpture, pottery, frieze, woven or fabric art, found object art, mosaic, jewelry, glass art or painting containing multi-dimensional objects
  3. Photography: any images taken with film or digitally, whether manipulated by computer program or not
  4. Poetry: a poem of no more than two pages in length in any style

Terms of Entry

All entries must adhere to the guidelines outlined in the downloadable Celebration of the Arts Entry Rules as well as the terms of entry listed below.

When entering the exhibition you will be asked to accept the Terms of Entry. Any entry that does not follow Terms of Entry and Celebration of the Arts Entry Rules will be subject to rejection regardless of the Juror’s decision.

Work

  • This competition is open to amateur artists living in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Amateurs are defined as artists who do not make their living from either selling their art or teaching art classes.
  • A maximum of three (3) original works created by the entrant after reaching the age of 50 may be entered in each of the four competition categories.

AWARDS

Three cash awards will be designated by the jurors in each category from the submitted .jpg images. First Place: $100, Second Place: $50, Third Place: $25. Award certificates will also be provided to all place winners and to honorable mentions at the discretion of the jurors.

Entries and Submission Fees

  • Please download and read the Celebration of the Arts Entry Rules before beginning the entry process.
  • Entries must be submitted online.
  • If you are entering more than one contest, you must separately enter work and pay for entries separately into the EACH contest.
  • Entry fees are $10 per item. Entry fees are non-refundable.
  • To enter online, you will need an MFA account that includes an email address and a password. There is no charge to create an MFA account.
  • Submit one JPEG image per piece entered, or as allowed. To provide the best image for juror set pixel dimension to around 2000 pixels on the longest side. File size may be no more than 2 MB.
  • Images of accepted works may be used at the sole discretion of The Beacon Newspapers and MFA for promotional purposes including but not limited to the invitation, catalog, web site or on a subsequent year’s prospectus. Image will include attribution whenever possible.

April 1 Online entry open for submissions

June 29 Online entry closes.

July 5 – 20 Judging takes place

July 25 All entries will become visible to the public at mdfedart.com/BeaconCelebration.

August 10 Notifications are sent to all competitors by email. Winners’ names will also be published at theBeaconNewspapers.com.

Notification

All entrants will receive notice by email from The Beacon Newspapers. The notice to accepted artists will include specific details and could vary from the Celebration of the Arts Entry Rules.  Contact The Beacon Newspapers arts@theBeaconNewspapers.com if you do not receive notice.
