Juror’s Statement

It’s been a great pleasure reviewing the 277 works submitted for the Maryland Federation of Art’s members exhibition at Gallery B. These represented a wide range of media, from photography to painting to works on paper and sculpture. While there was no particular theme other than MFA membership, what strikes me is how membership itself is a kind of theme. On display in these works was an obvious commitment, not just to craft and development of formal skill, but to concept and vision—often in viewing the submissions I found myself seeing something familiar in a new and exciting way. In stressful times we are reminded of the things that matter most, and certainly community is one of these. What I saw over and over in the works submitted was a seriousness of purpose and a dedication to making art that doesn’t just depict the world but that also transcends it. I want to thank MFA for inviting me to participate in this process; it is heartening to see so much good work and to be reminded of the importance of membership, community, and the support that we need to give each other as artists.
