Paint Annapolis 2019: June 2-9
Paint Annapolis is a week-long, juried plein air painting competition held in June, that brings to Annapolis painters from around the world. For 15 years it has been a premier event, joining artists and patrons of the arts together to share in the vibrancy of outdoor painting. Hundreds of residents and visitors come out to watch the artists explore, in paint, the special colonial architecture, marine atmosphere, and overall energy of Maryland’s capital city.
Dueling Brushes: Sunday, June 2
Dueling Brushes is a three-hour quick draw event where artists paint downtown historic Annapolis. Come out to see the artist at work and to view completed paintings at Susan B Campbell Park alongside the First Sunday Arts Festival!
7:30am – 9am: Artists check-in at Circle Gallery
9am – 11:30pm: Artists paint in historic Annapolis.
12:30pm – 2pm: Artwork exhibited at Susan B Campbell park.
Paint the Bay: Tuesday, June 4
Join us at Annapolis Maritime Museum for the Paint the Bay reception. This exhibition will feature artworks completed by juried artists featuring the Chesapeake Bay. Paint the Bay is free and open to the public.
6pm – 8pm: reception at Annapolis Maritime Museum
Nocturne: Wednesday, June 5
Come out after sundown and watch the artists paint the night. While you’re here, be sure to check out Dinner Under the Stars hosted by the Inner West Street Association. Watch paint fly while you dine!

After sundown: Artists paint on West St and Main St
Art on the Avenue: Thursday, June 6
Be sure to check out paintings of historic Annapolis at the Art on the Avenue block party. Maryland Avenue will be closed to traffic and lined with artwork, food, and vendors. Hosted by the Maryland Avenue and State Circle Association.
Beginning at 10am: Artists check-in at Circle Gallery (artists may also get canvases stamped the night before)
5:30pm – 8pm: block party on Maryland Avenue
Collector’s Reception: Friday, June 7
Be the first to view the work created during Paint Annapolis. The collector’s reception is your opportunity to grow your art collection, or even get it started! Everyone who attends the reception will receive a $50 discount on Paint Annapolis artwork purchased June 7-9, or on our website. While you’re here make sure to meet all of our juried artists!

Artwork created during Paint Annapolis will be on exhibit at Circle Gallery. The exhibition is free and open to the public, so be sure to stop by!

Public Painting Events
Paint Annapolis is not just for juried artists, there is a place for everyone to paint! This year’s public events include Dueling Brushes, the Nocturne, and Art on the Avenue. You can participate in one, two, or all three of these events! You may register at each event’s check-in or ahead of time online.

Dueling Brushes: Sunday, June 2nd
Dueling Brushes is a 2.5-hour quick draw where artists will paint in downtown historic Annapolis. After the three-hour painting window completed artworks will be exhibited at Susan B Campbell park alongside the First Sunday Arts Festival.
- 7:30 – 9am: canvas stamping
Artists should report to Circle Gallery before 9am to check in and have their canvas stamped.
- 9am – 11:30: painting
Artists are free to paint anywhere in the assigned area. Maps will be available at the event.
- Noon: judging begins
Judging will begin promptly at noon. All artwork must be framed and displayed on an easel (provided by the artist) at Susan B Campbell Park or the work will not be considered for awards.
- Noon – 2pm: exhibition & sales
Artwork will be exhibited and up for sale from noon until 2pm.
The Nocturne: Wednesday, June 5
The Nocturne is an opportunity for artists to explore Annapolis after sundown. Painting for this event will take place primarily on West Street and Main Street and artists must only paint after sundown. Completed Nocturne artworks will be exhibited by MFA at a secondary location for judging.

Artists are able to paint from sundown to sunrise. You may check in and have canvases stamped Wednesday from 11am-6pm at Circle Gallery.
- 6pm – 10pm: Dinner Under the Stars
As you set up to paint your nocturne, keep in mind that Dinner Under the Stars will be in full swing. Dinner Under the Stars is an outdoor dining event hosted by the Inner West Street Association. This has always been a popular event for our artists to paint! Check out their Facebook page for more info on participating restaurants and musical performances.
Art on the Avenue: Thursday, June 6
Art on the Avenue is an opportunity for artists to paint historic Annapolis and exhibit their work during the Art on the Avenue Street festival.
- Wednesday, June 5, 2pm – 6pm: canvas stamping
If you would like to get an early start painting Thursday morning, we suggest that you check in and get your canvases stamped Wednesday afternoon before the Nocturne. Come by Circle Gallery between 2pm and 6pm.
- Thursday, June 6, 11am – 5pm: canvas stamping
If you are unable to have your canvas stamped Wednesday evening, you can come to Circle Gallery Thursday starting at 11am.
- until 5pm: Painting in historic Annapolis
Artists are free to paint anywhere in downtown historic Annapolis.
- 5:30pm: judging begins
All artist must be back on Maryland Avenue with their completed artwork. Artwork must be framed, stamped, and displayed on the artist’s easel by 5:30 or work will not be judged.
