About the Artist

Carole P. Falk,   Annapolis, MD

I should have known when my brother almost "beaned" me with a valuable antique Japanese vase and I was more concerned about protecting the vase than my head, that art, particularly Asian art would become prominent in my life. After studying at the Arts Student League in NYC and college classes, I drifted into oriental painting, the study of Japanese flower arranging, and the creation of pottery containers for flowers. To support my preferred aesthetic with academic knowledge I earned an MFA in Ceramics and later became a docent at the Smithsonian's Freer and Sackler Galleries of Art. Several years of writing the Arundel Art column for "The Capital" further honed my eye and broadened my knowledge of western and contemporary art. After some 25 years of potting and a diagnosis of advanced arthritis, I decided to explore new options. I became a docent at the Mitchell Gallery of St. John's College in Annapolis, MD in order to expand my knowledge and in the studio I've been painting abstracts with acrylic paint on paper and canvas. Interestingly, even in this media my hand often points east.

I feel fortunate to have had clay pieces exhibited in many juried shows and pieces purchased by Washington DC corporations, the FHA building, law offices and a hospital. Over the years the MD Federation of Art, Ceramic Guild of Washington, and the Potters Guild of Annapolis awarded me prizes. My paintings have been accepted into juried member shows at the MFA, the Arts Council of AA County at their BWI airport gallery, “What’s UP” media group shows, a statewide show at the University of MD and at the Mitchell Gallery of St. John’s College, and two national shows.

My inspiration derives from a variety of eclectic sources: from the bay to jazz-- anything that evokes an emotional response. I try to capture that emotion in my painting in order to share it with viewers.
