About the Artist

Aysha Akhtar,   Gaithersburg, MD

I am a contemporary artist, living outside of Washington DC. By day, I am a physician (neurologist and public health specialist), military veteran, CEO and Co-founder of the Center for Contemporary Sciences, and the author of two books. You can read more of my bio here. But by night, I’m an artist. Self-taught in art, I view my artwork as complementary to my medical background. As a neurologist, I use my art to symbolize the interconnection of all life. Like the very neurons in our bodies, life is a complex tapestry of connecting threads that is in constant motion. Whether serious or fun, my art tries to capture the kinetic symphony of life and reflects the beauty and whimsy that surrounds us. My passion for art stems from my passion for the natural world and all the beings who share it with us. I especially have a deep connection with all animals and have been an advocate for animals most of my life. As a result of this deep passion, the ultimate goal of my art is to create an emotional connection with our planet and other animals. By doing so, I hope to help us all erase the artificial and rigid boundaries that we have drawn between ourselves and all other animals. Only then, can we truly heal ourselves, our planet, and the animals around us. I use a variety of mediums and techniques and bold color--never wanting my art to become repetitive. But I tend to approach all my art with a bit of raw wildness and without pretentiousness. I especially enjoy mixing different techniques and mediums on the same paintings, to keep them dynamic and unexpected. I just emerged as a professional artist in 2021. Here are some recent shows and recognitions: 2021, Juried exhibit, District Arts Gallery (Frederick, MD) 2021, Juried exhibit, B Extraordinaire Gallery (virtual exhibit) 2021 Artists for Ahimsa Award
