About the Artist

John T. Hanou,   SEVERNA PARK, MD

My photography involves paths of various themes: a gloomier, occasionally frightening realm of hidden dreams and past remembrances, sentimental playgrounds of childhood memories and a desire to explore the various spiritual offerings people have for their loved ones. Initially working with 35 mm, then large format B&W photography, the recent development of the digital process with full frame 35 mm has allowed my vision to grow exponentially, both in color and B&W. My computer is my new darkroom: the use of Photoshop, Lightroom and other software has allowed me to reconnect and share my vision of the world. I pare my work with foundations of ambiguous apparitions and convey a vision the viewer can bond with on many levels. I am an independent photographic artist. My energetic craving for photography began in 1971 after my father passed away. I try to capture the world as we know it, and offer it in a manner that others have not thought of.

Over the years I have shown my work in many galleries and have entered won several competitions. In 2015 I had best in show in an arts competition at the Mitchell Gallery in Annapolis. I am a published photographer and writer. My first book, "A Round Indiana, Round Barns of the Hoosier State" was published by Purdue University Press in 1993 and again in 2020. The book was a culmination of many years of work and research documenting the history and photographing Indiana's remaining round barns. The 2020 book is available in hard copy through the Purdue University Press website. I have also published several photo books through www.Blurb.com. These are: Having Fun at 35,000 Feet, Terminals, While Waiting, Through, Modern Visions of the Crucifix, Upskirt Mannequin, Broken Dreams, Light is Life, Angel of Angel Hill, Mourning Blooms, Vols. 1 & 2 and Lilly's Wake. I have several more planned. All of these books are available for purchase through the Blurb website: http://www.blurb.com/user/nhojuonah

My work today consists of photographing and writing about the round and multi-sided barns of North America, cemeteries and many of the famous landscapes presented in the American national parks. I have a manuscript on North America's round and multi-sided barns under review by the University of Tennessee Press. My landscape work has been rejuvenated coinciding with my ability to travel during my retirement. My favorite place to visit is the American Southwest. I work exclusively with Nikon equipment. My current camera of choice is the Nikon D800 and D850 with a variety of Nikkor lenses. I show my work in two websites: http://www.hanouphotography.com/#!/index http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/john-hanou.html?tab=artworkgalleries I trust you will enjoy my work. Best, John T. Hanou
