About the Artist

Stephanie Mcnutt,   Germantown, MD

My work attempts to reflect a deep exploration of the connection between human nature and the process in which I create. I choose to teeter between the boundaries of madness and order without fully submitting to either end of the spectrum. Each piece is constructed with layers upon layers of paint, graphite, and various other forms of mixed media. Through line and form I am able to find my way from total chaos to cohesive disorder. What looks visually appealing at first glance has madness underneath, when close up you can see where bits and pieces of where the painting began. This idea is very similar to ourselves as humans. Put together on the outside, but upon further inspection there are many layers underneath. It’s through the process of living that we add each layer, each piece that creates an ever evolving body of work. I find this idea so inspiring and an integral part of my process. I pull from emotional experiences, sounds, smells, the world around me. I try to make the work and process as organic as it can be.
