About the Artist

James Francis Hollan,   Arnold, MD

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST I’m a first generation American born and raised in New York’s Spanish Harlem. I attended college in Washington, DC and moved to Annapolis, Maryland in the late 1960’s. Having no capital to invest I worked three jobs at the same time and eventually started two successful businesses in Annapolis before serving as a vice president at the University of Maryland. I moved on to serve as the president or chief executive officer of several national and then international associations. I was flattered to be appointed to two White House Advisory Commissions and I’ve served on several International Trade Missions which in turn led to being a regular speaker/advisor at International Trade Conferences. My professional career allowed me to travel the world. From China and India to Kuala Lumpur and Barcelona I’ve had the chance not just to visit but to actively participate in the working life of many wonderful and exotic places. I retired a few years back and I now have much more time for my art; time to drink better than average wine and time to learn from my wonderful and talented grandchildren. Life is good.

I’ve dabbled in fine art for more than 30 years. I am self taught and I work most in collage, mixed media and digital mixed media. I am a story teller and my work is meant to be provocative. I want you to look at it and make your own story from the ingredients. I’ve written several hundred articles and four books over the years but words are not enough for me. Georgia O’Keefe summarized it best when she said: “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way, things I had no words for.” I absolutely agree.
