About the Artist

Temple Blackwood,   Castine, ME

During the more than 40 years of active commercial woodturning in my own shop, I developed my passion for woodturning, a deep understanding of the wood and of the skills required, and the extended benefits of sharing my experience in the classroom of woodturners. I am especially interested in bringing new turners of both genders and young people to turning and hope to foster the uniquely personal community connection we all enjoy. I have a great interest in learning and teaching. I enjoyed my career as teacher/headmaster in the independent secondary school world managing the organizational complexities as well as working directly with students and our faculty/staff both in academic classrooms (English, technology, communications) and in the woodturning art studio.

As a long-time member of the American Association of Woodturners (www.woodturner.org), as founding member/treasurer/webmaster of the Chesapeake Woodturners (www.chesapeakewoodturners.com ) and now of the Maine Woodturners (www.mainewoodturners.org) and the Eastern Maine Woodturners, I have been honored as a regular demonstrator and teacher for other turners as one who prefers to turn multiples, spindles, and to explore the magic skew chisel,. Having two of my three sons in adulthood join me as woodturning artists and my middle son welding fixtures, tools, and jigs brings a special dimension to our relationship and family. The blend of my own focus on turning and my enjoyment in teaching enhances my commitment to our craft and art.
