About the Artist

Carol Cowie,   Annapolis, MD

A native of Maryland, she has lived in the Metropolitan DC area and now lives in Annapolis. Carol began her career as an accomplished art director/ graphic designer working at national advertising agencies. She started her own design business of 16 years and her primary client was National Geographic. Her design background has given her a solid foundation of the value of strong concepts, composition and color in her approach to painting.

Carol is best known for her bold colorful richly textured paintings. “I have always been awestruck by nature’s beauty which is why I love to paint from life, or Plein Air. There is nothing more inspiring and rewarding than painting outside, surrounded by the light and sounds of nature, along with it’s ever changing color and harmonies.” Carol has studied with Hai-Ou Hou, Kevin McPherson, Palden Hamilton, Tim Bell, Larry Moore, Rita Cutis and Quang Ho. Carol most recently taveled to Tuscany Italy with Trisha Adams and a small group of plein air painters. “ I am most influenced by the bold and loose brushwork and color of John Singer Sargent and also Joaquín Sorolla, a master at capturing the effects of light on his canvases; his style was immediate and at the same time deliberate.”

Carol enjoys Plein Air Competitions and has participated in Quickdraws in Annapolis, Frederick, Easton, Cambridge, Chestertown and Harford County. She has won second place in 2017 Annapolis and third place in 2017 in Hartford County. Carol has exhibited in galleries throughout Maryland at Lowe House Gallery, Maryland Federation of Art, Benfield Gallery, Crystal Moll Gallery, A.M. Gravely Gallery, River Gallery Galesville, The Galleries at Quiet Waters Park, and River Gallery Chestertown. She is a member of Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association, Maryland Federation of Art, and Working Artist Forum.
