About the Artist

Judith Kohn,   Tucson, AZ

Collage is a relatively recent art form, first used by Braque and Picasso about 100 years ago. The juxtaposition of disparate images, colors, and shapes in a collage expresses the pace and discontinuity of much of modern life. We are bombarded with images and words from TV, radio, and the Internet. Collage reflects the chance encounters of everyday life and the diverse information and images that fill our modern world.

My process for creating a collage involves layering a canvas support with Japanese masa paper that I have painted with acrylic inks. I include papers I have collected or created: newspapers from Japan used for packing items, postcards, experimental watercolors or monoprints and souvenir tickets or receipts. I add, subtract, and layer papers of different colors, textures, and shapes to form a composition that is unified and expressive.

My artistic intention is to create an artwork that engages the viewer and offers visual pleasure and complexity.
