Katie Cundiff

For artist Katie Dobson Cundiff, painting is “Plein and Simple” as “painting from life gives life to my paintings”Cundiff_Katie

With a love of the outdoors and a passion for painting, Katie became a fan of plein air landscape painting while a student at Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. Upon graduating from Ringling in 1971, Katie and her husband (also a RCAD graduate) started a decorative accessory design business , and by the 80’s their business included national wholesale representation selling to stores including Marshall Fields & Co., Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, Sacs Fifth Avenue, and Speigels Catalog. A chain of their own retail galleries featuring their exclusive designs paved the way for a business in apparel printing featuring wildlife artwork created by Katie and sold through zoos, aquariums, and major conservation and wildlife organizations.

A trip to the Guatemala Rain Forest in 1994 lured her back into painting the landscape, and her love of plein air painting was renewed. She has since traveled throughout the US, South America, and Europe receiving numerous awards and recognition in plein air events and festivals for her work. Katie is a member, has exhibited and received awards with many respected art organizations including the Oil Painters of America, The American Impressionists Society, American Women Artists, Women Painters of the Southeast, Cumberland Society of Painters, and Plein Air Painters of the Southeast.

Currently, Katie conducts her own plein air and studio workshops and is on the faculty of Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL where she resides with her husband. Together, they have three grown children, all artists in their own rite, and two grandchilren.
